My name is Michaela Boyce. I am 24. I live and work in my hometown of Petersburg, WV. I taught Special Education to grades K-6 last year and I am currently teaching 4th grade Math. Next year, I will be teaching 1st grade.
When I began working towards my master's, my declared focus was Special Education. However, due to the inability to complete student teaching because of work obligations, I am getting my master's in professional development. I have, however, taken every special education course required except for the final semester of student teaching. This particular course was my elective course of choice. After one last course this fall, I will graduate with my master's.
I chose to share a video about the power of literacy:

My computer keeps freezing and won't let me attach the comic strip so above is the link to it! Enjoy!
Hi Michaela, and welcome! Technology, with all of it's blessings, can be frustrating when it won't cooperate! Even with the issues of having to switch masters, your SPED education will be well-utilized! :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck this summer!!!
Michaela,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to 6809! I understand your dilemma with the student teaching. I am hoping to get a full time position this next year and I have also looked into a special ed masters/certification but am concerned about the final semester of student teaching if I have a job. I know you will be glad you went for your masters in special ed since these jobs are so plentiful. Good luck this summer with this class. I know technology is an essential part of learning especially for the special ed student.
If you are teaching, why didn't they let you student teach? I am doing my student teaching in the fall in my own classroom? It stinks that you couldn't get it worked out because special education is one of the most full-filling jobs I have ever had (although I never worked before so it's the only one)!
ReplyDeleteI will be in a general education classroom next year, not in a special education classroom.
DeleteI was in the same boat as you. I started off pursuing my degree in special education; however, I can't complete my student teaching at this time so I transferred to professional studies as well. I look forward to reading your posts!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear I am not alone!
DeleteMichaela you have the same name and spelling as my little girl. It's good to "meet" you. The NASA IV&V ERC has traveled to Petersburg a few time to do teacher trainings. My brother-in-law is all the the President of the Grant Co Banks. That's a nice area.
ReplyDeleteI actually took one of the NASA trainings from a guy that visited here a while back! I cannot remember his name though! He spoke to us about Podcasts! It was super helpful and I've already used the software he recommended!
DeleteHi Michaela,
ReplyDeleteI hope you find blogging a new and exciting learning experience. This is only my second time using a blog for a class and I'm still learning new things about it. I hope you like 1st grade next year....it is a world a difference from 4th grade. I too hopped around grade levels until I found what worked for me and what I liked. I'm currently teaching 5th grade and plan to stay there for the long haul. Good luck this term and in the future.
I am getting my degree in Professional Studies as well. I think it's funny that your computer was messing up and we are in a technology class, which tells us that technology is not always reliable. I too chose not to go into another Masters program due to the student teaching.
ReplyDeleteHello Michela. My mother's maiden name is Boyce. Great last name. There are many in WV. Fourth grade math sounds fun. I don't know if I have what it takes to be a Special Ed teacher because I have noticed that they do twice as much paper work as a Regular Ed teacher. Good luck to you.
