How old are the people in this picture?
1 child and the rest are adults.
What historical period and geographical location do you think this picture represents? Why?
I am guessing that this time period was the 1930's or earlier and the people are appear to be Caucasian so I am assuming this took place in England or another predominantly white society of this time period.
How might the people be feeling in this picture?
It could be a family gathering so possibly happy.

What in particular strikes you about this picture?
I keep focusing on the man entering the room.
Note something about yourself that might have led you to focus on these particular aspects:
I am curious to know if he is a guest and if the woman is preparing to greet him or sit down.

You and I saw many of the same things in the picture. I also felt that the time period was probably the 1930's and that it was set in England. I thought the gentleman's attire looked English as did the maid at the door. I also didn't get the impression that it was a sad occasion. I can't explain why, but I felt like the gentleman was coming to assist the young children there possibly as a teacher. It might have been his attire. It is interesting to explore the differences and similarities of our perception of the picture.
ReplyDeleteMany of us felt that the time period was similar (1920s-1930s). Interestingly, I didn't see the woman at the door as a maid so much as a friend or close relative of the family. I personally saw this as a surprise visitor - I would think that teacher would not be a surprise to either the child(ren) or the mother. But, again, that is my interpretation! :)
ReplyDeleteIt so interesting how these images can be interpreted so differently. It has a lot to do with individual background knowledge and experiences. I thought the scene took place in the late 1800 and the people were about to receive bad new about a loved one. This exercise is a good example of how visual literacy and visual composition lend themselves to cultural bias in their interpretation. This is extremely important for our students to understand if they are to become visually literate!
